Brandstifter + Lichtblau perform the first democratic artists’ book aart zine with customers
We publish the very first issue of aart zine on the 2n of June 2011 for the 21th Mainzer Minipressen-Messe book fair, Mainz, Germany.

The interdisciplinary artist Brandstifter and silkscreener and publisher Kerstin Lichtblau invented aart zine to combine their skills in book art and communicating with a huge network of astonishing contemporary artists and fanzine makers around the world. For each issue they invite 12 artists to perform four exclusive pages in A5 format for aart zine, with drawing, collage, photography, copy art and stamp/print techniques, among other approaches. Brandstifter + Lichtblau reproduce these works of art as double-sided digital black and white prints on one A4 landscape page – each artist’s work on a differently coloured sheet of paper – in a limited edition of 120 and design a silkscreened cover themselves.
Instead of just following the normal process of book making and editioning a fanzine by binding the printed pages they present the ready-made ingredients for their artists’ books at book fairs and exhibitions as an open source. It is left up to the customer to decide: a) which artists/pages they want to have compiled by B + L b) in which order in their individual issue. This process is similar to an election in which the works of art are the candidates and the customers elect their own parliament – for aart zine. Brandstifter + Lichtblau raise the passive consumer to an active editor who decides on, and endows each book with, a unique character of his or her own choosing. Each customer leaves the stand with a finished book.

12 internationale Künstler gestalten jeweils vier Arbeiten für Dein ZINE und Du selbst entscheidest für Deine persönliche Ausgabe, welche Seiten Dir gefallen und in Deinem Heft in Deiner Reihenfolge von uns gebunden werden. Nur durch Deine persönliche Auswahl ist jedes Heft ein bisschen anders, entstehen individuell neue Geschichten, Verwandtschaften und Gegensätze, die Du entdeckst. Und das ganze live auf der Mainzer Minipressenmesse.
